Why Democrats are Turncoats to Many of Their Voters

Liberals, Media Bias, Social Issues — By Harrison on July 2, 2009 at 6:00 am

In a recent Gallup poll about how Americans see Democrats as being “too liberal” (they also said Republicans were “too conservative”) we can see why we get the kinds of Democratic leaders that we do – polarizing and hypocritical.

Looking at these numbers the percentage difference between a Democrat or a Republican labeled as being “too” whatever is not huge (it is smaller for Democrats probably because they ran for office from the center and those effects haven’t worn off yet).

If we look at what those “all important” Independents think of the two parties (note: I am a registered Independent) we find an interesting set of results:

In this case, Republicans are overwhelmingly viewed as being “too Conservative” (as if being too true to your party’s values is bad) and, thus, out of touch with Independent voters.  But because Independents are not registered with either party they are also rather fickle and thus cannot be counted upon to support either party uniformly which is why Obama’s election was close in total numbers because Independents probably split slightly Left.

So what is going on here?  It’s up to speculation but I believe the Republican party takes a big hit because of how the media portrays them about gay marriage, abortion, environmentalism, and the insinuation of racism (when Michael Steele, who is black, was made head of the GOP it was suggested that the GOP needed a black man to be their voice so they didn’t look so white).

But what these poll results illustrate, I believe, is that whomever runs for political office has to run from the center (not a new idea) but, in cases like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, they have to campaign one way with a knowing wink to their extremist wings and then try to placate them as quickly as possible once they take office before the rest of America realizes what is going on.

This knowing wink and the betrayal to the voters is probably why, since 1970, Republicans have controlled the White House for 26 of the past 39 years.

With Bill Clinton we had a slew of proposals in the very early days of his administration that were Left Wing like gays in the military, the BTU tax, and socialized medicine and with Obama he ran a sprint to pass the “stimulus” bill and is trying very hard to ram though Supreme Court nominee Sotomayor, pass Cap-and-Trade, and socialized medicine.

A recent poll (also by Gallup) has shown again that Americans are overwhelmingly not Liberal so when a Republican runs, and get elected, voters pretty much know ahead of time what they’re getting (one interpretation is Republican candidates don’t have to lie as much about their positions on issues) whereas with Democrats they have to appear to respect the reality that most Americans are not going to agree with them on core issues.  Hence the quickie change in “beliefs” once a Democrats gets in office.

Getting back to the original point of this article regarding Americans getting the kinds of Democratic leaders that we do we can say that Democrats must conceal their true beliefs (and agreement with hardcore constituencies like Global Warmers, unions, etc…) and act very quickly to get those agendas passed before Americans wake up.  It happened with Bill Clinton and it is happening with Barack Obama (and after Democrats were smashed at the polls in the following election Clinton became a better Conservative on many issues than Republicans were).

Based on all of this I will predict that Obama’s sweeping Left Wing plans for America will fail and his party will take a huge hit in two years.  Of course, if I’m wrong I’m sure I’ll hear about it.

I read once that statistics don’t lie but statisticians do. No matter who is doing the polling, numbers can be skewed. Having said that, Obama is doing what he must and a lot of that will be painful. These are reverberations from the Bush administration and we will not heal quickly. Those who want a quick fix are deluding themselves. We did not get this way overnight and really, Obama has only been in office for six months. What do folks expect, a miracle for those who derided him as the Messiah? He is not, nor will he ever be the Messiah.

There are no “quick fixes” only long, slow mistakes which are daily occurences in Washington.

Yes, you can go after the source data but not the fact that Bill Clinton tried to pass some very Left Wing bills into law in the same pattern as Obama and was trounced.

Very good post Harrison! I like that…

    askcherlock-
I don’t think Bush can fully be blamed for the current economic situation. For example, the collapse of the housing market and subsequent banking frauds had their roots in the early 90’s, and not in the last Bush administration.

and BTW, many parts of this stimulus bill are quick fixes. i fear they will eventually burden my kids.

  • askcherlock says:

Our children were doomed to carry this burden from the policies set forth long before Obama. True, many parts of the stimulus package are quick fixes. Had they not been done, the country would have wallowed in a deeper recession for a longer period of time. The “quick fixes” are only part of the solution. Obama is looking long-range and setting up programs to prevent the financial disasters we have witnessed and to which many have been victimized. True growth is often painful and requires sacrifices.

You set up a situation in which Obama cannot fail. If the stimulus had not passed you would say the economy is worse because of that fact. The stimulus did pass and you say the economy would have been worse without it. In either case you have no proof. Have you considered the fact that messing around with the economy may be prolonging things?

You can apply your logic towards any policy if you wish… whether it be Bush, Clinton, Obama, etc.

Obama is indeed looking long range. Only by spreading the cost of predictable, systemic financial disasters such as cap and trade and socialized medicine over decades is he able to conjure up enough wealth to make people believe that we can actually afford all this crap.

sac.ri.fice n. – a euphemistic term used by politicians to hide from their constituents the fact that they (the constituents) are getting screwed.
